Is it true that mothers who smoke greatly contribute to it?

They aren't sure where colic comes from. To the best of my knowledge, there is not a connection to smoking and colic.
I lucked out - my baby didn't have it. But my sister dealt with it with her youngest. It typically starts around 3 months, and can go from 3 to 6 months (yikes!!).
They offer different things to assist with colic - warm baths (calming), baby massage (again with the relaxation), and finding a way to prop the matress in the crib at a very slight angle (that I can't tell you why).
I would speak to your doctor. They will be able to offer different techniques to aid in helping with the colic (there isn't a cure because they don't know the cause). Just stick in there, use others to assist you so you can take a break, and remember that you are doing all you can, and the crying will calm eventually. I wish I could tell you more, but I don't know anything else. . .

Babies that come from smoking mothers have a higher percentage of sudden infant death syndrome but I have heard of smoking contributing to colic.

Babies are not born with colic, they develop it around 3 months or so. My first baby had colic and I am not and never have been a smoker.

my baby had colic for the 1st 6months of her life.. I thought I was going to go crazy! I have never smoked.

i don't think babies are born with colic..thank God my children do not develop it.i think the kind of bottle they use helps.they use AVENT.it says it's anti-colic and i think its true because it never became a problem to me.
