why does it seem to me that the coursework at private colleges is easier than from a public (state) college?
I've taken courses at both, and the work seemed easier to me at the private college.
Does anyone agree?

quatrapiler: good point, because at the state university I went to, there were kids from private high schools who were having a tough time!

It's like a reversal of education. Public high school curriculum's suck, but I felt like I was steam rolled when I went to a public university, and I went to a private high school! I completely agree with you.

I never had coursework at a private college so I can't say for certain.

With private colleges they are free to do as the please. They can have what courses they want and what is to be done.

Whereas a public college is regulated by the government. Most importantly public colleges, high schools, junior high, and elementary schools have to standards that they have to meet. Private schools are not required to meet these standards.

So in effect private schools do not have to prove themselves per say. They don't have to meet standards.

With public schools the general public is paying for it, therefore it needs to be regulated so that people do not feel like they are paying for other people to get a crappy education. Whereas a private is paying their own way so they don't have to answer to anyone except who pays for school.

It depends completely on the private college -- and also on the public university. University of California schools, for example, are much more selective and difficult than Cal State universities. UNC-Chapel Hill is much more selective than UNC-Wilmington.

On the other hand, Private Catholic Schools like Georgetown or Notre Dame will be much better than St Johns or Seton Hall, and private universities like Stanford, Duke or the Ivies are much tougher than many private schools.

I've attended two private universities (Villanova and Duke) and two public universities (UC-Berkeley and U of Minnesota). I found all four schools very challenging.
