Hmmm...you make a good point about "mic" and mikerophone.
But in 1st grade "mike" was what I learned as the proper abbreviation.

Also, it is "bike" not "bic" for bicycle, right?!!!
To me, "mic" looks icky...

It's usually "open mic" because of the way microphone is spelled, but I've seen both, and I've never encountered anyone who was confused by the use of the latter.

Usually, abbreviations are a small portion of the word that they are abbreviating. Unless you spell microphone, "mikerophone," it wouldn't make much sense to abbreviate it with "mike."

Microphone is abbreviated "mic" note "mike".

We have always called it a "mike." Consider the abbreviation for electrocardiogram is ekg. And that is what we call it, not an ecg.
