I do both to my daughter, when she is awake I mostly pat her back when she has fallen asleep while drinking her bottle I rub her back and snuggle her at the same time.

I have never heard of patting a baby to burp making them jumpy and hostile.?.? Maybe that's what grandma was told 30 or 40 years ago, but things change. They used to say to put your baby down to sleep on their stomachs too and not to take a baby outside of your home (not even outside) or have them around people at all for the first 6 weeks of their life. None of that is advised anymore.
I usually start out rubbing my daughter's back for a minute or two and then start patting.

I think it's one of those old wives tales.
Personally, I do both. I pat her a few times and then I rub a few times and repeat the process until I get a good burp. Seems to work for me and my baby isn't at all hostile.

I think this is a old Grandma's tale, I have 3 children. I patted and rubbed all their backs, they are all fine. I think it is the choice of the parent. If you pat their backs and they do not burp, rub their back. This helps move the bubbles up. I use to have a mother-in-law that thought she knew everything to, but when I mentioned some of the stuff she had told me to my family doctor, he was the one who gave me the phrase "Old Grandma's tale"!

Definitely an old wives tale. I prefer rubbing, myself, though, it seems to work better. I rub/massage gently up the back starting at the bottom up to the top, over and over till the burp comes out.

Yep this is not true. Anyway that the baby burps is fine and it won't make for jumpy babies. That is just an old wives tale.

grandmothers are from the generation where everyone did what the grandmothers before them did, and it was a big deal to go against past generations of habits.
every baby is different
you take the advice that is useful to you, and disregard the rest.

They're both the same, but rubbing from the bottom to the top worked best with mine.
Good luck

Usually you should just do whatever works. If just patting keeps them calm then fine, but if you need to pat and rub then that's fine too.
