My wife says it's impossible to love someone but not like them; I disagree. What do you think?

As soon as you and your wife can agree on the definition of "love", you can start debating the question above. The problem is not in the question itself, it's in the definitions. What one defines as "love" is very individual. According on what I "love" means to me, I cannot "love" a person without also "liking" them. "Liking" someone and enjoying someone's company are such fundamental things to my personal understanding of "love", that without them love itself would not be possible. Obsession or lust would be possible... but not the feeling *I* call "love".

However, if one equates "love" more with obsession or lust, then the answer to the question would be "yes".

I think you can love someone becouse they are related and you care about them but you can dislike their personality. Not liking someone dosn't mean they always mean or obnoxious. I have family that I love very much and can have an enjoyable time with but if they were not family they would not be the type of person I would call friend or seek a friendship with.

Your wife is correct; you cannot love without like. Love is a greater stage of Like. You may not always like what someone you love does, and love sometimes can change, but like is the foundation to love.

Yep...I know this for a fact. You can love someone til it hurts but that doesn't mean you have to like them. I am in a similar situation. I love my boyfriend with every cell in my body but here lately we have become complacent with one another and our relationship is suffering from neglect. He talks down to me all the time and says things purposely to hurt my feelings. I am always doing things for other people and I tend to push "us" to the back burner. Looks like I'm paying the price too.....

Yes, because we fall in love before we notice the things we dont' like, and then don't want to give that up just for being annoyed.

spouses are the most annoying people on earth!

hmm...that's a hard question!!! I think that you have to have both in order to equal one or the other, If you didn't begin by lking the person first then how on Earth did you get to LOVE them?!

That made me laugh...
Only because I've told my husbands many times "I may love you, but I don't like you very much right this second"!
