First, there is not reason to stay hard. The sex act is done and the semen (with sperm) has been ejaculated out. Also, a man can't be walking around with an erection just because he's had sex. It's dangerous to do that for any prolonged period of time (cardiovascular-wise) and in the broad scheme of human evolution, all of that business would get in the way of hunting, defending himself, etc.

Each erection has a cause and whether physical or mental stimulation the penis will fill with blood and get larger and harder. However at some point either the stimulation ceases or orgasm is achieved and the penis goes into a state of relaxation whereby the blood flows out and the penis goes flaccid. Now although this is the general rule, some guys can actually maintain an erection through multiple orgasms however, at some point they will go limp. and once limp, after an appropriate rest, it can be restimulated and resume the action. I gues in this respect, the penis is like the body as a whole; after a period of physical activity it requires a rest period.

Here is my theory, taken from general understanding of how things work in that area. Consider it takes some form of arousal to inflate the penis in the first place. Continued stimulation will keep it hard. During this time your brain is busy pumping out the right signals to keep it hard. A distraction from this activity, such as your mother knocking on the door, will interrupt the brain signals that are saying... keep it hard!! It will go soft. Orgasm is a form of interruption as well. Orgasm acts more like a reversal of the signals. During and after orgasm your brain is busy taking in the Ecstasy of the moment. The outgoing signals telling the penis to stay hard are blocked.... it will go soft.
Of course there are exceptions to the rule. Under the right circumstances a guy might be able to have 2 orgasms without going soft between them. Just how this happens is prolly too complicated to explain here.

After orgasm the male penis goes into a stage called Resolution. In this stage it rests, desensitizes, and gets ready to be aroused again. It is just the normal routine for male sexuality. In young teens they make get a little soft but not totally flaccid and may be ready for another round in a few minutes. In old men resolution may take several hours.

The job is done. Usually that is the cause--the guy is finished and the sexual tension subsides--that's why is is also called climax. If the guy is still turned on, though, the erection can remain for another ejaculation, usually 30 minutes or so later.

I wish I could answer your question, but all I can say is that this is the way of life... This is how it goes... It is only natural. Not alot of guys can either have orgasms without ejaculation (therefore staying erect afterwards) or ejaculate without orgasm (also staying hard after...).

It goes soft because it no longer needs to be hard. Its job is done. Wouldn't you be embarassed if it stayed hard anyway?
