I don't think there is any harm in asking when you have the interview to be honest. Most gay/lesbian people are open about who they are. The thing i find most worrying is that it bothers you? any particular reason this bothers you ?

If you are really looking for a person to do an specific job in your house whether its taking care of your child, cleaning the house or taking the poodle out, you don´t need a pretty young lady, the baby nor the poodle will note the difference.
If you need a sexual partner go out to a bar or somewhere, but don´t look for it, in an "Au pair"
Of course its discrimination.
Hope you don´t consider the truth a bad answer.

LOL! If you are in the UK, then yes it is illegal to discriminate on the grounds of sex. As you've already figured out though, the best way around it is not to state that is your grounds for not employing someone. Your advert should not state you want women only.

I assume you'll be employing fewer than 10 people for this purpose. In that case you don't have to worry about sexual, racial, religious or age discrimination provided your recruiting methods are not offensive or likely to incite violence. I suppose there's no point me applying for the job?

Just place the ad - and wait for the knock at the door from the discrimination police.

Try to see her arriving. Then if she's a bogwoppit, have a tin of vegetable soup handy, fill your mouth, and barf over her. If she frightens the dog, hire for for security.
