CNN is reporting that Rummy is resigning. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Bush say less than a week ago that Rumsfeld was staying on to the bitter end?

If so, this would be a definite flip-flop.

So, why do Republicans and conservatives mercilessly attack Dems such as Kerry for flip-flopping when the president has just done the exact same thing?

Mastermind, you clearly don't live up to your nickname. Rummy twice submitted his resignation to Bush who refused to accept it; this was widely reported. And, as noted in the question, just last week Bush said he wanted Rumsfeld to stay on. So, regardless of whether Rummy submitted his resignation again or whether Bush asked him to resign, in either case Bush flip-flopped since last week. You, along with others of your Repug ilk, seem to be fine with Bush doing that but you moan and complain that a Dem flip-flopped when they, as one of you so quaintly put it, "adapted to changing circumstances". Pure hypocrisy, as we've learned to expect from Repugs.

Robert S, seems like you're splitting hairs there, with your "Oh, Bush didn't flip-flop TECHNICALLY". See my comments to (sic) Mastermind.

I haven't heard that yet, but here's my thought on it. Yes it's a flip flop to an extent. But I'd guess that now that Democrats have won the house they would want to get Rumsfled as far away from any hearings that may be called. Then of course blame the entire sinking ship on him.

Not a flip-flop...this is the best decision the current administration has made in 6 years. I bet Georgie and Dumsfeld had a running bet: "IF the Dems take over, I'll resign" said Donald Duck. Georgie, laughing, said "Dummy...I mean Rummy, I'll take that bet" and hence...since they must stay the course and never admit a fault, they are anteing up. It's a better day than I thought...and I ain't even a Democrap!!! HA HA HA

It's not a flip-flop, it's realistically adapting to a changing situation. When situations change, you need to do things differently. The people have spoken in opposition to their "stay the course" BS and getting Rummy out is a wise move on the part of the administration. (Their first wise move in a LONG time, I might add.)

R's mercilessly attack D's in order to keep the D's too busy defending themselves to actually fight back... because the R's have no defense they need to stay on offense.

Well, because Bush isn't firing him he's just accepting his resignation. Pres. Bush probably asked him to submit it but he thinks Americans aren't smart enough to relize that. SO technically its not a flip flop.

Maybe Rumsfield decided to step down on his own? Or would that not fit in your narrow little world view?

Bush said he wanted Rumsfeld to say, it wasn't an order or prediction. He was offering his support.
