Let me add by saying depression is a clinical diagnosis made by asking question and noticing behaviour etc. You don't make a diagnosis by measuring the chemicals in the brain. Now please tell me how do you assess depression on a child that can barely make a sentence!
I saw the child and mother on tv this morning and i can't see anything wrong with the child and i can't say the same about the mother

Well i agree that is a chemical imbalance but this not how you diagnose it. You still diagnose it clinically not with measuring the imbalance in the brain. It is very difficult to diagnose it in adults let a lone a 4 years old!

If it can happen to my six year old step-son, it can happen to anyone. The way they determine depression is by a question and answer session and by observing the child in question (damn, I sould like one of those investigate tv shows). What made my step-son depressed is that (according to the doctors) is that he sees that he thinks he ownes nothing. Yes, he has his toys, his room and his Nintendo....but something is missing. Some background info here: My wife is divorced from an abusive ex-husband. He witnessed these events until she decided to leave him. His dad doesn't want to see him and he notices this. Although I try not to get in the way, he sees me as his new male adult figure. The report stated this also and encouraged me to engage him in more play time and so forth. Medication has been prescribed and he is slowly turning around.

Well i do disagree with you on the chemical part...your brain has a certain an=mount of chemicals that are needed too make the brain work correctly!!! If a child can have behavioral problems at that age then why can't there be depression???
I do hope they are not misdiagnosing the little girl because you know as well as I do America is over drugging our children....sometimes we have to let things ride before we jump to medication!!!!
Most people don't show depression by acting sad all the time or crying and things of that nature...sometimes it kills contentment!!!

Depression isn't always about things that go on in your life. Depression is about brain chemistry. It is heredited. I have a 11 yr old that suffers from depression, and from the symptoms, he probably had it when he was much younger. Medication fixes the chemical imbalance. It makes things a lot better for him. Learn about things before you call them silly.

Well I heard they can, it's from too much stress the parents may be putting her under, like to do well in school, or something, and the parents might be constantly argueing, or she might be ill... but I agree with you that all this hooha about it will surely make anyone depressed the poor kid. I say just let her have some hugs and kisses and some 'unsupervised play' and thats the best thing for any child!

Kids pick up really fast what their parents are going through.
is it a depressing household? is there fights on a daily bases?
Many things can trigger this. It is also handed down from family.
A lot of the times the child is being abused in some way.
If the doc's say she's depressed,then she's depressed.
sexual abuse? that's the first thing that would enter my mind about it all.
Actions can also show depression. You don't have to have someone talk to know they are depressed, that is wrong.
Babies can die from depression.. they are depressed when they don't get love. they die.
so your theory of depression showing from making a sentence is wrong.

at that age children can learn to become depressed... her mother maybe depressed and the child has watched that behaviour and copied it. the child maybe getting bullied or abused and that can cause the depresion. because the doctor has diagnosed her with depression the child maybe getting rewarded for being depressed (getting more attention for being depressed-getting presents to try cheer her up, geting more cuddles excetera) this may keep the child in the sepressed state... also there re alo of methods for checkig if a child is depressed, behaviourist, clinical checks, cognative tests...
hope that helps...

I know I had my first spell of depression at about that age. How do I know? Because my father was still living with us when I did. My parents got divorced when I was 5. Yes, a 4 and 3/4 year can get depressed. Depression isn't just getting sad.

I think what really has happened, is the child did not get into the mothers choice of school, so the mum is stressy and the kid is picking up the vibes.
I saw it on the news at silly o'clock this morning, if the kid stressed now just wait until it older!

depression is a chemical imbalance in the body. you cab be born with it and you can inherit the tendency to be prone to it. if you care about this child read some info on it, help, don"t criticize.
