The only balls in ice hockey would be on the male players, coaches or referees. and while males may play with their balls or scratch them at times, the game of hockey is played with a puck. A hockey puck is made of a hard rubber and is circular in shape about 3 inches in diameter and an inch thick.

Here in Canada we play hockey with a puck on ice. If playing road hockey or hockey while in school gym we will use a ball, and darn it if we don't call it just what it is - a ball.

Its called a puck, it's shaped like a disk but really thick, it weights about 6 ounces and is made of solid Vulcanized rubber and frozen to limit bounce. For things like broom hockey or floor hockey sometimes a small rubber ball is used but as far as ice hockey goes it is a puck.
