Think of it this way. Your in TX in the central time zone.

New York is on EST (Eastern Time) one hour ahead of you.

El Paso is on MST (Mountain Time) one hour behind you.

Los Angeles is on PST (Pacific Time) two hours behind you.

You can reference each of these places when someone tells you what time zone they are in, and calculate accordingly.
