After doing similar training with fire departments, and law enforcement agencies, you would only be wasting what oxygen you have left by trying to even punch out a window. Once the car hits the water, you olnly have seconds to react properly. Since most cars have power windows, and if the system is shorted out, you wont be able to get the windows open. What you are going to have to do is to get your door open, even if but a crack, this will help to equalize the pressure, but no matter what, will still be hard to move but will get easier once the pressure has been more equalized. Like I said you have to react quick. We did tests to demonstrate what would happen if you drove your car into a lake, river by putting a 1998 Honda Accord into a water tank, with a dive intructor inside with an oxygen tank, and plenty of safety divers just incase. We tried to demonstrate trying to punch out windows, in which if you did, most people would not be able to. The best solution was to get your door open as quickly as possible, even if it is at the bottom of a lake, and the pressure makes it next to impossible to open, once a break is made, the water pressure would begin to help get the door open.

If you are in a sinking car, you should immediately open the windows. Right when you hit the water, start opening.

If you are driving on ice you should leave the window open a crack.

If you wait untill you sink, you won't be able to punch out the window at all, plus broken glass can kill you.

The most effective window breaker is an automatic center punch.
It is pushed against a surface until the spring and mechanism inside causes it to pop. The nice thing about this is that it won't be held up by water resistance.

They are used by fire departments, and can be purchased at hardware stores.
