He sounds like he just needs more time to run around. This is the age when they get pretty rambunctious...they've hit puberty for GP's and have tons of energy. Just like humans they like routine but want to mix it up a bit sometimes too.
Whatever you do though...DO NOT use one of those balls they sell in the pet stores. Not even the huge one's. You can seriously injure your pet. Guinea Pig spines do not bend in a downward curve like most rodents they bend upward in the middle. The ball forces their spine to bend in an unnatural way causing all sorts of problems. With other rodents this isn't a problem...their back bend that way with no problem. GP's are special in many many ways.

There are excellent people here to talk to and lots of great informed information. You won't regret it. I'm the proud mama of two male GP's and this forum has been invaluable for me in learning how to keep my boys happy and healthy.

Ah. I haven't had guinea pigs but I've had rats. My second rat was very much like that. I got him when he was a baby and when he got to be about 1 or 2 years, he didn't want to sit on me anymore of anything. All he wanted to do was run around. But he only wanted out for 10 minutes at a time and then he would want back into his cage. I didn't hold him as much as you do your guinea pig, but I was around him every day and got him out every other day or so. (i still don't know what his problem was) But it might just be your guinea pig's temperment. Maybe he likes to explore and now that he's older and knows the couch, he wants to find new and better places to roam. Maybe you should try holding him in new places every once and a while? Just a suggestion. But I do know that guinea pigs are very smart. Hope that helps! Bye.

He wants more free time. Is his neutered? He's mature now, so he also may be feeling the need to breed. You can go to PetsMart and they have a collapsable metal cage that is just the sides that you can get to put him in. It is just hexagonal shaped and about 4 feet wide. I got one for my little guy when he was just a baby and he loved it! Also, do you have a grassy backyard? Get a little ferret leash and take your cavy outside to explore. He might be getting bored. Try getting him some new toys. They also have a big exercise ball like the ones for hamsters.

purely be affected human being with them. it may take a lengthy time period for guinea pigs to get used to people. i have had my guinea pigs for type of four months now and they nonetheless run remote from me and cover after I come into the room. If I sit down nonetheless in there although, they'll finally come out and be well-known. I take mine out for type of 0.5 an hour to an hour for cuddles and they get an hour or extra of grass time quite somewhat daily, so purely save doing what you're doing, yet in case you want to make sure swifter progression of their behaviour, take them out for longer classes of time and comprise them on your daily common. they're said as guinea PIGS for a reason! you may attempt to muddle prepare them once you've the endurance for that. there are diverse web content and YouTube video clips that would want to instruct you procedures to attempt this. which could help reduce down on the mess. i have purely come to the end that it really is what they favor of their cage, so purely enable them do it. i am going to position their boxes and hideys the way i favor, besides the undeniable fact that the subsequent day, they have moved all of them and that is a pigsty in there. :D i do not learn about windex. i exploit vinegar to sparkling my cages. that is organic and there's no chemical substances in it. I also now and again use dishwashing detergent. yet whichever one i exploit, I make confident I rinse it off extremely nicely, purely in case the piggies can get sick from it. Bedding is a personal determination with guinea pigs, i have found. i exploit fleece bedding and locate that it extremely works extremely nicely for me, yet i recognize guinea pig vendors that use timber shaving and CareFresh and all sorts of different stuff that they swear by. you may want to attempt Aspen shavings and observe if it makes a huge difference on your cage. solid success with each and every thing!

They don't always want to be held. Let him have "floor time" and then hold him again some. They are the most loveable rodents, aren't they? I have had 2, Myndie and Squirt. The carrot is good. Have you tried Celery? they love that.

I don't think it has anything to do with it not liking you. Those creatures like to move around and explore. If you don't have one, go buy one of those balls that you can put him in and he can wonder around the house.

it's probably because he completely trusts you and feels safe and just wants to explore. There is stuff called bitter butter that you can buy and spray on cords to keep him from chewing on them. Good Luck!!!

He thinks if he will get down, he will get a carrot. Simple stimulus/response situation here.

sounds like he is just curious to see what is going on, if he didn't like to be held or be by you he would hide or bite you. Just like humans, as we grow our minds and habits change.
