Attending a university "full time" depends on the number of credit hours you are enrolled in. I think at most schools, 12 credit hours is full time.

Each class you take has a certain number of credit hours. It's almost like a point system. Each class is worth a certain number of credits or "points". You only receive the credits if you pass the class. For example:

English 101: 3 credit hours
Math 101: 3 credit hours
History 101: 3 credit hours
Speech 101: 3 credit hours
Total credit hours for the semester: 12

Some classes are worth more or less credit hours, depending on the class type and length. Once you meet a certain amount of credit hours (usually about 120 or so) then you are eligible to graduate (assuming you've met other requirements).

Hope this helps!!

Being a full time student usually means you will be taking 12 hours or more during one semester.

A semester hour is usually looked at by the amount of preperation time one is expected to have during a week. A rule of thumb is that if you are supposed to prepare 2 x the amount of hours that a class is worth per week. For example Taking a class worth 4 semester hours it will probably be expected to prepare for that class at least 8 hours during the week.

A semester hour is a unit. The general rule is that for every hour in class, a student will spend 2 hours preparing (reading the assigned texts, doing research, etc.).

So, for a 4-unit class (4 semester hours), the student will spend 4 hours per week in class plus 8 hours outside of class preparing (2 hours outside of class for each hour in class). If there is a 1.5 unit lab also required, the student would spend an additional 1.5 hours in lab plus 3 hours outside of class preparing for lab work.

There are no 8-unit classes that I am aware of (I teach at a community college), so I am wondering if your 8-hour example is based more on the standard U.S. idea of an 8-hour workday?

12-units (or 12 semester hours) is the minimum for a full-time student: 12 hours of classes each week plus 24 hours of prep. time = 36 hours a week at minimum: the better students spend even more time preparing.

Hope this is helpful.

Full time is generally taking 12-15 credits per semester. It has nothing to do with hours.
