I was reading a few news feeds and some sites have said that the Democrats have already won, while others claim that the race is still undecided.

Looks like we're in for several weeks of uncertainty.

The Democrats need both Montana and Virginia. They have slight leads in both. We should know about Montana within a week.

Viriginia, on the hand, could take up to a month, if not more.

It would be great if the Democrats wind up with 51 seats (including the 2 Dem-leaning independents), but even with 49 or 50, they will be far more influential in the Senate than they were with only 45.

It's still up in the air as of this writing. So far, the new Senate will have 49 Republicans, 47 Democrats, and two independents who will most likely caucus with the Democrats. The Dems would have to win both uncalled races (Virginia and Montana) to take absolute control. Winning one would result in an effective 50-50 tie, which means Cheney would cast the tiebreaking vote.

Edit: I just saw that Montana was called for the Democrats, which makes it 49-48-2, or effectively 50-49 in favor of Dems. However, as I stated above, Webb still has to unseat Allen for Dems to take control of the chamber.

ABC News has just called the Montana Senate race for the Democrats, so yes the dems have the majority.

Democrats don't have a majority yet. Virginia isn't conceded to the democrats yet.

Although in truth there is little chance that democrats won't have a majority in senate next year.

the republican majority is gone at the moment.. it's even.. we are down to one race and the dems have a slight lead.. but it's being hailed as too close to call right now... so officially we don't know yet and i'm sure there will be recounts for this race no matter who comes out on top the first coun.

Eilisha is wrong. They DID just call Montana, but Virginia is still "too close to call" even though most likely the Dem will win that since he is ahead. So in a few hours the Dems will have control, but not "officially" yet, even though most of us know the outcome! you know?

Not officially but by the end of the night, probably.
