Generally speaking, Republicans have typically been conservative and have been more for big business, whereas Democrats are liberal - for the most part (there are conservative Dems and liberal Reps). Democrats typically fight for the little guy, and have a broad interpretation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, whereas Republicans are strict Constitutionalists and adhere to strict interpretation of the Bill of Rights (no leaveway).

Now, on to the current situation - Bush is not a typical Republican. He seems to make up the rules as he goes, which goes against the grain of Republican beliefs. As we have recently seen, there are many immoral Republicans - this also goes against the grain of party morals and values.

Republicans are shunning Republicans because of a mix of beliefs, and a change in their norms. I think we'll see a split in the Republican party soon, and maybe a three-party system, or the disolution of one of the Republican splits.

The Democrats have had some problems, but I think they're getting over it because of the rift in the Republican party and the scandals that have wracked that party.

We're going to see some changes after these recent elections, and next election in '08 when the Dems take over completely.

It's back to prosperity, then - after a bit of a clean-up session.

I hope this helps!

Democrats want change and Republicans are more for preserving our heritage; Democrats want big government and more governmental spending (and hence more taxes to pay for this big government), Republicans want smaller government and less governmental spending. Also, Democrats are generally pro-choice and Republicans are generally pro-life (although that issue can vary - I think people just form a personal opinion more than anything).

Those are the biggest differences I can think of.

Republican like small governement and giving all the power to a few people (look at Bush and Cheney) and prefer to hand money over to the rich in the hopes that it will trickle down to the poor.. Democrats favor bigger governments to distribute the power evenly and are bigger on social programs.

Republicans are the adults, and the Democrats are the children.

Reps think logically and are willing to make unpopular decisions if it's what's really best - like your parents. Dems guide their lives with their feelings regardless of what makes sense - like a child.
