The smallest country in the world is Vatican City (or the Holy See) with total area of only about 0.44km2 (almost 22 million times smaller than the US and 1574 times smaller than Singapore, a fairly tiny country itself).
Monaco, the second smallest city, is only a little bit bigger, at 1.95km2, followed by Nauru and Tuvalu (both in the Pacific).

When I read this question I thought I immediately knew the answers - Vatican City, an independent state within Rome.

But then I read Tham's answer and decided to check it out. I was astonished to discover that Tham is right. The Sovereign Order of Malta is recognized as a sovereign body in international law and issues (for instance) its own passports.

I guess the only thing making the decision a bit more complicated is that they have now been given possession of a castle in Malta again. I guess it probably doesn't have diplomatic status, so it probably doesn't count towards the territorial claims of SOM.

There are also a few 'micro' territories (micronations) where people have just claimed that their house, ranch or farm is a sovereign state. I don't think (but haven't checked this out) that any of them are recognized in international law, but a few of them have issued stamps.

Some claim no territory at all, which is a lower size limit which is difficult to beat! (see reference below).

If Vatican City's full name is Vatican City Country or Vatican City State then the answer is Vatican City. However, Vatican City has never been called as such. So for me, this place is not the smallest country in the world.

How about San Marino?
