My husband and I started shopping just after the completion of our first trimester. We shopped for items that weren't gender specific until the 5 month ultrasound.
With our son (firstborn), I didn't go nearly as crazy with buying clothes as I did with our daughter (second). It was easy to buy all those cute, soft, pink outfits. But please do take the advice of some of the other mom's on this forum and don't buy too many newborn clothes or 0-3 months clothes. My daughter was 8 pounds 11 ounces at birth and didn't even fit in the newborn diapers and clothes! She went straight to 0-3 months and size 1 diapers.
She's 6 months old now and wearing 12 months size clothes. If this is your first baby, you'll learn that the clothes sizing is just a general idea of what babies will wear.
Also, another tip - don't go by what the weight limits on the diaper packages say. It may say 16-22 pounds for size 3 diapers, but if your baby is only 13 pounds and really uncomfortable in size 2 diapers, or keeps soaking through the size 2, go ahead and buy the next size up.
As for what things to recommend buying, if you will be nursing your child, the Boppy pillow is a must-have. It's also great for helping baby to learn to sit up and tummy time.
Other things that my daughter loves is her swing and her bouncer. She'll take 2 to 4 hour naps in them. And believe me - that is a life saver some days!
Best of luck with your pregnancy and with your little one to come.

Depends on how many family and friends you have for the shower. One easy thing that you can always start buying is diapers and wipes. Don't buy too many size 1's as babies grow so fast out of those. The crib is one of those "big ticket items" that I put into Lay-A-Way. Also, I never used a changing table - it was easier to just change them wherever I was. I had 3 in 3 years, though - so I was a little busy :-)
It's your baby, girl...shop when you want to shop! And it's never too early to start buying. The longer you can stretch out the spending, the better you'll feel. Make sure you do up a registry, though - that way you know what you have and what you need.
Good luck!

With my first, I waited until I had my ultrasound (20 weeks). This one I plan on waiting an little longer, past the viability stage. (around 27-29 weeks). Call me paranoid, cause I know some ppl start the moment they find out! Best of luck to you for a happy safe pregnancy!

you should wait at least after your first trimester. You should also wait to tell your friends til then too. Too many times women are susceptible to miscarriage. I know, it happened to me.
