I agree with you as far as trusting him, but if he is telling the truth - for a change - that's a good thing, so let's not jump the gun yet.
He knows some of his "own" followers have finally said, enough is enough!! He's walking a very thin line.

Well of course, his "Power Base" just got shot to he--, but he will still be in for 2 more years. Now he will go around trying to get the Republicans back in office and will show a gentler side. I don't think it will do any good as I foresee a Democrat being the next president and 3-5 Senate seats going to the Democrats unless something really bad happens again.
