Changes yesterday? Aside from a shift in power, other stuff - Did stem cell research gain any footing?

Help me go from woefully uneducated to reasonably in-the-know....
My limited understanding: A lot of hot issues decided by the masses yesterday - abortion?, Stem cells?, Gay marriage?
What else and what changed?

The Republican controlled congress already tried to get stem cell funding, it was Bush that vetoed it. If the Democrats re-raise the issue, Bush is just going to veto it again. And the Dems don't have enough votes to override a veto.

Ultimately, nothing has really changed. The Republicans have been acting like Democrats for the last 6 years. Bush controls the agenda on the war on terror, so nothing has changed there.
