What is your favorite theme in science fiction movies, books, television or any form?

Is it the future or the past, time travel, space travel, alien worlds and visitors, fantasy worlds of the Dungeons and Dragons type, big brother totalitarian societies, paranormal or psychic phenomena or whatever? What type of theme do you enjoy most, why, and what is your favorite particular work or series of the entire genre?

This is not a question where you have to agree with what I happen to think, like so many questions are. Just make it the most interesting answer and earn some points!

Alien worlds, definitely. Ever since I was aware of there being other planets as a child, I've never been able to look up at the night sky without feeling a sense of frustration knowing that I will never know EVERYTHING that is out there. There are so many, many planets that just imagining the forms of plant and animal life that must exist is enough to fuel hours of daydreaming for me, and I love any books or movies that revolve around that theme.

I kinda like the idea of "The Island" interesting clone theme. It takes something from our headlines and everyday discussion and debate and pushes it one step further.

I do love the time travel idea...back to the future series was brilliantly done compared to some of the other time travel films.

Rarely will I see a film set in midevil times that isn't distraught with mistakes and inconsistancies.

I love reworked fairy tales. Two of my favorite horror movies were based on fairy tales: "Snow White, A Tale of Terror" and "Company of Wolves", which is a brilliant working of Little Red Riding Hood.

There is also a series of anthologies edited by Teri Windling:
* Snow White, Blood Red
* Black Thorn, White Rose
* Ruby Slippers, Golden Tear
* Black Swan, White Raven
* Silver Birch, Blood Moon
* Black Heart, Ivory Bones

My favorite anthology is one written by Angela Carter called "The Bloody Chamber".

In my opinion, Bluebeard would make a much scarier monster than anything out there.

I like the tolitarian society theme. I really liked the movie Farenheit 451, where you couldn't read books because they were forbidden. I'm not sure why, but it just appealled to me. I think I like how the main character changes his ways during the movie. The movie Equilibrium with Christian Bale reminded me of Farenheit 451, I liked that as well.

I'm a big Heinleinian. I really enjoy reading about the actual workings of alien or future societies.

I liked the sci-fi cowboy theme of Firefly, and the message that people have the right to choose their own path, and no matter what you do you cannot MAKE a person better
