Well we are preparing for thanksgiving here and this is the first time I have had to buy a turkey - and I am wondering how many pounds to buy - we have 2 eight year olds, and 7 or 8 adults two of whom are elderly and will not eat as much - any suggestions or direction about where I can look? thanks!

You can plan on about 6-ounces per person, regardless of age. A serving would be 3 to 4 ounces, but the bones of the bird account for some of the weight ... and some people will eat more than others. So about 6-ounces per person is a good number to base it off of.

Depends on whether or not you've got a freezer, if you like turkey!

For company meals, the usual rule of thumb I've heard is: one pound of meat per person will give plenty for the meal and a little later snacking, plus some for leftovers for carrying home. But when in doubt, go big----the turkey will certainly not go to waste. Your elderly folk may very well be first in line for leftovers!---freezer bags are great.

There's only two adults in my household (our kids all go meow), but we'll typically get a BIG bird----on the order of 18-20 pounds, because you get a better meat-to-bone ratio with a large bird (less wastage). And it's really not that much more hassle.

The meat can be picked off and frozen in plastic containers or freezer-weight bags. If you need extra gravy, just make up chicken bouillion from cubes and thicken that, or use canned broth (and unthickened is perfectly fine, for freezing the extra meat in). Think hot turkey sandwiches, turkey and rice, turkey and noodles---tetrazzini if you're ambitious, turkey soup (start adding vegetables and go crazy!), etc.

Have a great holiday!

General responses to this question should include a formula of 1lb to 11/2lbs of uncooked bird per adult. Turkey leftovers tend to not be a major problem as there are a wide variety of soups to be made from the carcass. Simply put, buy a ten pound bird.

a pound per person. this accounts for the bones etc. plus it's thanksgiving. hey, if you have leftovers, you can send them with people or just eat leftovers. mmmm. good stuff.
