why do we even have a "black history month"? I thought all of this civil rights stuff was about us all being the same; is there a "white history month"? it seems that some people don't want equality at all; cases in point Black Miss America, BET, black history month, black mayors' conference, black chamber of commerce, etc.; you can't have it both ways; decide so that everyone is on the same page!!

That is a very good question, I have often wondered that myself and I'm afraid I have no idea of what the answer is. Everyone involved in black history month should I believe focus much more on the positives of black history rather than the negatives. However thats not to say that the crimes/horrors of our past should ever be forgotten.
I personally believe that black history month should be a celebration of black achievement but that a seperate time of year there is a more sombre occasion to remember the victims/horrors of slavery ( a bit like remembrance day)

In my area we call it team spirit month. We concentration on historic contributions of all cultures interior the united states. With my fourth graders, we did point out slavery because of the fact we stated human beings like Frederick Douglass. We additionally stated the Civil Rights stream and how there have been some black people who did no longer choose it and there have been different cultures that helped with it.

While you are trying to figure this out, I will keep wondering why there is even a "black history month". Shouldn't accomplishments be celebrated everyday and just not in February?

No idea, but it should focus on accomplishments, or else no-one will move on and let go of the victim mentality.
I personally don't see the need for it - I know who my black heroes are as we were made conscious of them when we were small.
If you reside in Britain - hold on to your hats as it will probably be a bigger event next year, seeing as it will be the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery in the UK.

A stunningly good question!!!! I have always wondered why people (not just black people) always look to the bad old days, and not at the best things about their history.

This is quite possibly one of the best questions I have ever read on Answers. Well done, I shall be watching it!

Perpetual victimization to fuel white guilt. My family came here long after 1865 so let 'em whine.

Because it is easier to ***** about the past and wallow in it than to move on and be happy.

Slavery is part of the fact that the Blacks have overcome those obstacles through strength and unity for each other. And it's also a very big part of history in the USA.
