I have a BlackBerry 7130 and I just love it.
When you'll get emails with attachments, you'll have a choise to view them. If you do so, they will be compressed and will be sent to your BB. The good thing about compression is that a 2 Mb document will not take 2 Mb of bandwidth. However, you will lose much of the formatting.
Most common file formats are supported: Word, Excel, PDF, images, etc.
Fortunately, if you forward an email with attachments, they stay in their initial format, which is quite neat when you think about it...

No, it should come with the software preinstalled for PDF and Word attachements.
