I don't think its all about the milk. I would be willing to bet that even if you did dry up the milk, your baby would still want the comfort of nursing.
I too, think that the best way is to slowly wean your baby off, by taking away one feeding every few days or longer, if needed.
Don't expect this to happen overnight. She has spent all this time seeing that you are her comfort and nurishment. Don't ruin that by making it taste bad.
Even though here in the US they recommend nursing for the first full year, the worldwide recommendation is 2 years. The idea is that the baby weans themself off when their body is getting enough nutrition, and when they gain more independance. You have put so much time and effort into the last year and a half...don't throw it all out the window now. Give this some time, and ease into it.

Good luck, and Congratulations on making it so far with breastfeeding!

For your baby's emotional health it's best not to just stop cold turkey. At 1 1/2 nursing is much more than nutrition for her, it's being close to you and feeling secure and loved. When I weaned my kids, the first thing I did was to make time for snuggling and play to make up for what loving there was during nursing. Then start reducing the times you nurse. Usually the bedtime nursing is the hardest to give up for the baby although some really love the first morning feed. If she has particular times she usually nurses, substitute an activity that precludes nursing (zoo, library, bath, walk, you get the picture). At most you should only reduce one nursing every 4 or 5 days. (by the way, I don't think you can take the pills to dry you up while you are nursing!)

That's terrible! Don't make it "yucky"..that's mean if you ask me. It's like "Oh okay it's time to eat..oh wait..I tricked you! It's yucky now!"

Just start limiting how often you feed her. Start taking away one feeding a day and replacing it with table food. Take her to the store and let her pick out a special sippy cup or a plate with Elmo on it (or whatever she wants) and tell her that is her big girl plate that she gets to use now. Put her food on it and if she doesn't eat then fine. She'll eat when she's hungry.

Aside from just stopping and putting up with the crying.. i dont know what to tell you. Shes not jsut going to up and decide she doesnt want to nurse, you have to make that choice for her. Get her a sippy cup and some enticing food, and get through the crying. It'll only take a while.

In Shakespeare's _Romeo and Juliet_, the Nurse mentions having weaned Juliet using wormwood (thereby embarrassing the heck out of Juliet, which may have been part of the motivation for telling the story). But, however:

This page says wormwood is toxic. I doubt that a naturopath would prescribe it today for weaning.

how about making the nursing fiend take a number...like at the bakery....and park a couple of other hungry mouths there. soon the kid will get tired of waiting and go to the refrigerator and drink out of the milk carton

Your doctor can give you meds that will stop you from producing milk.Regardless your baby is going to cry when you make the change. Most mothers stop when the baby gets there first teeth.

just stop!!!!!!!!!!! don't give in!!!!! Breast feeding is sooooo convenient and quick but you gotta pull that cup out!!!! right now the baby can damn near tell you what it wants. Although ti's healthy and possible to do for 5 years and some people do....if it's making you schedule crazy....STOP. It's not that serious. at least in America
