I am in the process of buying a car and i see some have 4x4 and some say AWD. Could anyone explain me the difference between those two and which one would be more preferable? Thanks

AWDs are 4x4's which are permanently locked so. Fluid couplings deliver ratios from 30:70 to 60:40 between front and rear depending on the situation.

Typical 4x4 SUV's allow you to change over to 4x2, which is more fuel efficient. If you spend most of your driving time on 'soft' roads, a 4x2 with a changeover to 4x4 is good enough for you.

4X4 is an on demand four wheel drive system, AWD is four wheel drive at all times.
