Usually, the website will tell you if it closed for the entire month, or scheduled for shutdown for just a few days. If it is closed, it is closed. (plenty of other stuff to do, see, and ride)

My main suggestion to ANYONE going to Disney World, is to take your time and really, really enjoy it. Check out the details- try to find "hidden Mickeys". These are designs in everything from the sidewald cement, metal railings, paintings, etc, that the Imagineers (or designers) of Disney World have place there deliberately. (It is the symbol of Mickey's head + two ears, basically 3 circles) They are fun to look for. There are even books that give clues.

Have a great trip.

Here are some additional tips that will save you some time at the park. Are you thinking of arriving at the park when the park first opens? Delay your arrival to the attraction parks at least an hour from opening and you will bypass the usual crowds of people who thought getting there early is a good idea.
Before you visit the park, pick up a map of the attraction that you are visiting. You can find them in any hotel lobby, in magazine racks along the roads, or in some stores. Map out what you want to see before you get there. This will save wasted steps from going over to an area you are not interested in.
When you enter the park, resist your natural urge to go right. Most people will go towards the right side of the park, when you enter the parks, go in the direction of left. You will find that you will be going against the crowds instead of in the directions of the crowd.
Enjoy your trip

It looks like it will be closed from Jan 2nd until Jan 27th, 2007 for refurbishment. The only way you'll get to ride it on your trip is if you visit Jan 1st or after the 27th. When a ride is closed, its closed.

If you love water rides, I recommend the Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom instead.
