Both the USA and the former Soviet Union relied on former German scientists to get their space program going. What gave the US the edge to win the race to the moon was the thousands of Canadian engineers who came from the cancelled Avro Arrow project. The Canadians arrived in the US for the birth of NASA in 1959.

It was not quite thousands of engineers, but some dozens. Thousands lost their jobs when Avro Arrow was canceled, but only a few of them came to the US and joined NASA. And yes, they did make important contributions.
