I suggest you visit some of the national parks of the mountain west. Some of my favorites are:
Grand Canyon National Park
Yellowstone National Park
Grand Teton National Park
Arches National Park
Canyonlands National Park
Zion National Park
Yosemite National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Mesa Verde National Park
Chaco Culture National Historical Park
I also highly recommend a visit to Santa Fe and the pueblos of northern New Mexico.

Well since you didn't mention where you are in the states, its hard to stay where your starting point and ending point would be. I live in Atlanta so I would suggest going from the east coast to the west coast then back through the south. That way you can see the mountains, the Grand Canyon, the beaches of California then the lovely plains of the midwest and the plateaus of the south.

Yosemite is very nice. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is beautiful if you like to hike or camp.
Your age shouldn't matter except if you need handicapped facilities.

We took a vacation one time where we only planned a day ahead. Each night we would find a motel and then plan where to go the next day. We had a great time.
