The website below has recipes for grits, jowls and possum pie.
Just type one of the three into the search bar at the top of the page.
You'll be relieved to hear that possum pie doesn't actually have possum in it!

Grits is served all over Europe in a thicker, and some times rigid, form. It's just corn meal and you've had corn before. Jowels are hogs heads and I've seen people eat them. Again, in the old country, nothing was wasted. That's where cold-cuts and sausages came from. Mashing all the left over meat parts into a usable form. Since the U.S. and Canada were settled and built by Europeans, the practises have survived.
As for eating opossum. I suppose some do. And I'm sure that if I, or you, were lost in the woods and starving, a opossum stew would sound really good.

I eat hominy grits. They are corn grits, I think. It's like a cereal. When i had it, it was like cream of wheat. I think they are whole grain, and good for the digestion.
Not sure, I think they can be fried, too. A little maple syrup, yum.
Never really had jowels. If they are not to fatty, I bet they would have some protein and flavor.
I think I would try the possum pie, if they came from a clean, natural area. Good protein. Why not?
Oh, and they are vegetarians, possums. That sounds like a good clean meat, I think.

I don't know about those last two but grits are tasty and eaten. Think of a flavor like popcorn - which is universally loved.
They sell grits in packages even up here in New England. They cook quick and make a good side dish which is nice for a change.
When you eat in Southern restaurants grits are always available on the menu. Even eating at a fancy restaurant in Beau Rivage Casino in Biloxi Mississippi grits are a standard starchy side dish.

Grits is coarse ground white corn meal. Boiled it gets soft and is good as a warm serial like oatmeal, cream of wheat. etc can be spiced up or let get cold and sloced and fried like potatoes.
Jowls is the neck and cheeks of fat hogs. It is strips of lean and fat just like any bacon. It just is irregular shaped and can't be pressed into blocks like side bacon. It is usually smoked like other bacon and is good fried. It is flavorful Just not pretty because it can.t be cut into pretty strips. It is good in bean soup too.
Poor people in the south used to eat possum. I never tried that. Possums are so ugly. I am from indiana, but been everywhere

Hell yeah. Grits are a southern staple, every black american i know from the south eats it. What the hell is JOWELS...why not eat possum pie. In some swamppy parts of Florida they eat large rats (can't remember their name, more akin to chinchilla than house rodent).
America is vast and great and people's need to survive in her wilderness has led to lots of food choices.

Wow there are still people like you left in the world! I happen to be black so of course I eat grits (J/K). I spent time in Minnesota and a lot of people there ate grits too. There's nothing weird or funny about grits. They taste goo and are a good alternative to oatmeal (yuck). You should try them with cheese (ummm).

A lot of people eat grits and jowls are just a piece of pig meat. I have never met anyone anywhere who has eaten or at least admitted to eating possum.
