The British occupation of India has put their social evolution behind by a couple decades. While the British occupied the area, they reinforced the caste system and now that they are no longer there, the bad habit prevails.

Vegetarianism. Since nature has a way of re-inforcing itself and, through most of human history, it took courage to hunt for meat, the eating of meat, even if bought at a store, produces courage. Notice that only the warrior caste was allowed to eat meat. Since we outnumber the rich 100 to 1 and can crush them like grapes, an aristocracy has to feed cowardice to the majority.

it has been an organizing system for that culture for a long time.
