All babies spit up. I know, when I had my son I was shocked too. Perhaps the meds aren't working because he didn't have a problem to begin with. The puke just comes up when they swallow too much air. Try a different bottle, Dr. Browns are supposed to be good, or Advent. Good luck, and don't worry. He'll grow out of it when he starts to eat more solids and sit up on his own. Until then keep the spit up rags and bibs handy! Congrats on your baby.

Acid reflux is not natual when it is severe. My son had it since birth, and screamed almost non-stop. We didn't figure out what the problem was until he was close to 3 months, the doc put him on zantac and it worked great, but I read that it doesn't work for a lot of babies. I have read that prilosec is better, so ask about that one. Also keep in mind that it is caused by an immature sphincter on their esophogus and no medications will stop the spitting up, it will just calm the acid and lessen the pain for them when they do spit up. Look up infant acid reflux on ivillage.com that's where I read about it.

Maybe instead of the drugs there are some other things that might work better Try a different type of bottle Dr. Brown, Parent's Choice(Walmart Brand) or the Playtex Nursers worked great for my son. Instead of shaking the formula stir it. This made a huge difference for my son. Make sure you baby is sitting upright when eating. I also let my son sit in his bouncy seat for at least 30 minutes before letting lay down during the daytime. You might want to change formulas(with your doctors OK first) also. Try to only give your baby regular soy formula at a very last resort. Enfimal has a formula out that is for baby's who can't tolerate soy or milk based formulas.

If you are breastfeeding, you may want to give up the dairy products for awhile and see your baby is having a hard time digesting dairy.

my little girl had acid reflux and was put on zantac. She was spitting up all the time and it smelled like stomach acid. She had to be on it until her 6 month check up and had been eating solid food for a while. She is all better now.

This is like the new OCD or IBS, all you ever hear about are babies with acid reflux. I think its over diagnosed as a way to calm worried mothers. Most babies who spit up constantly and have constant colic can be remedied without starting their lives with harsh medications. But thats you and your doctors call.

Call your doctor and tell him the medication does not appear to be working. He may decide a higher dosage is needed to chemically control his body.
