Curiosity. They are exploring new senses, and taste is one of the first to develop, even in the womb.
At birth sensations in the mouth are more highly developed than in any other part of the body. The mouth is truly the baby's "window to the world." Many babies use the mouth before they are born to suck their fingers and make discoveries about their intrauterine world. After birth babies continue to put their own hands in the mouth, and suck or mouth the fingers of a parent, the edge of a blanket, clothing, pacifiers, and other objects that come in contact with the mouth. This generalized mouthing predominates during the first 4-5 months of life. Through this type of mouthing the baby becomes familiar with general sensations of softness, firmness, and hardness. These sensations familiarize the child with the sensations they will encounter as they move from the nipple to a spoon or cup. (from http://www.new-vis.com/fym/papers/p-feed1.htm)

babies explore with their mouths before anything else. They explore to find taste, texture hot, cold and since they dont really realize that they have hands yet they just put everything to their mouths so they can learn about it. Just make sure that the things they do put in their mouths are clean and no little parts that they can choke on!

It's babies way of exploring his new surroundings. Baby is experiencing, taste, shape, texture, etc... A baby's mouth is an incredible touch center with very sensitive nerve endings that tell her a lot about what she puts in there.

Because if it fits in their hand, it'll probably fit in their mouth.
Seriously, they're exploring and learning about new things. They don't know that not everything is food, so they try it. The only way they learn that food isn't everything they touch is by the older people teaching them so.

Because sense of taste is the most commonly used for them, as they are trying to find out about something new, they automatically put it in their mouth.

I would have to agree with the curiosity and exploring new things... plus some may be teething and need something to put on those itchy gums!

There sense of taste is the first thing to develop, so in order for them to learn about the new object, they stick in in their mouth. Learn taste, texture, hard, soft...etc.
