It might help if you indicate that this is intended for the U.K. I'm American; however I was in England last year at Christmas, so I'll go ahead and answer it.

1. I bought a variety of chocolates, other candies, and biscuits last Christmas.
2. I bought different things at Sainsbury's and at Tesco.
3. Packaging was the primary motivation for my purchases. I was also looking for things that were traditionally British.
4. In America we have a wider variety of Christmas products from around the world. Britain also has a large immigrant population, but the selections of festive foods from other cultures seemed more limited. Perhaps that's because most of America's immigrants are Catholic, while many of those in Britain come from non-Christian traditions.

1. Chocolates, chocolate log, pannetone (Italian Christmas cake)

2. Usually Tesco but I buy pannetone from an independent Italian shop

3. Previous knowledge of goods and other things that Tesco produce.

4. Yes, there is a gap I think for something like a Christmas cake but without as much fruit, marzipan or icing. Something like a German stollen or the pannetone where there are different versions to cater for different tastes but they are still pretty good to look at and you are not too embarrassed to put it out on the table in front of your relatives on the big day. Traditional cakes and puddings are too rich and heavy in our opinion.

Or something that was like a chocolate log crossed with Carte d'Or/Ben and Jerry's ice cream and Bailey's liqueur. That would be good!

1. Christmas Cake, Chocolates and Preserves. The Chocolates and Preserves I usually buy the gift sets.

2. Um, I think you're not where I'm from...I live in Illinois, so I would try one of our local grocery stores (Dominick's or Jewel (Albertson's to the rest of the US) or a discount store like Target or Wal-Mart, or Macy's (previously Marshall Field's) for Frango Mints.

3. I would say packaging (is it "Christmasy" with red and green decorations, bows, etc.), previous knowledge of goods and brand name. There are certain "new" things I would try just based on the brand.

4. No, I actually think the market is glutted with Christmas products. Right after Halloween, we are bombarded with everything Christmas. You're tired of it before it comes, really.
