could you elaborate on this? i don't really understand what you mean. but, like if you have the square root of 144, you could factor. (i will use ^ to represent square root of)
^122= ^12 * ^12= ^6*^2*^6*^2, ^3*^2*^2*^3*^2*^2,
^2*^2= 2, and you have that twice, so it is 2*2*^3*^3,
^3 * ^3= 3, so you have 2*2*3= 12.

you guesstimate... =)
square 1 = 1
square 2 = 1.somethng
square 3 = 1.something larger than square 2
square 4 = 2
...
square 8 = square 4 * square 2 = 2.something (you know this has to be less that 3 because that would be square 9)
