Why do people get bullied?

To answer this, consider why some people are bullies... The short answer is that bullies are under the misconception that degrading other people somehow gives them power -- power to get their way, power to "look cool," etc. Bullies will go for people who seem susceptible to being bullied. People who seem weak to them. Bullying stops when the person being bullied doesn't let the bully's behavior phase him/her. This can be very difficult to do if one's self-esteem is already low, so the bully will continue bullying ... again - because it's an easy target. Stronger friends should stand by the person being bullied and help block the bullying instead of standing idly by, which only enables the bullying. I hope you are not being bullied -- if you are, please seek out the help of your friends and a trusted adult.

Most people who get bullied have very low self esteem. Or they are very introverted. It the person who is doing the bulling who also has very big problems with their self imagine. Most bullies are people who in some way very unhappy with their own life some where someone is or has been bulling them. And they feel better by taking their pain and misery out on someone else. And some times it's not always the little one. Some times they pick people who can whop them because it's a cry for help.

People usually get bullied because they are unique and special. The bully feels threatened by this - as they are neither. In fact most bullies are to be pitied as their self esteem is so low that they feel they have to push other people around or bring them down in a public arena - in a desperate attempt to be noticed, accepted, admired or even feared. Bullies choose only the victims they know they can beat - either physically or pychologically because they are cowards. This means that gentle, arty, creative, musical, intelligent people are often chosen as targets. Sporty, strong people are not usually bullied because they are not easy prey. People also get bullied because no one around them has the guts to stand up to the bully. This includes friends of both the victim and the bully(if he/she has any) and sometimes parents and teachers. Some people have the misguided view that bullying is part of growing up. It shouldn't be. It has always astonished me that if a colleague continually harassed ME at work and physically hurt me every now and then - I could have him/her charged with assault and demand that they be dismissed. I could even sue my employer for failing to provide a safe work environment for me. Because I am an adult. A child does not apparently have the same rights. Children and teenagers are expected to front up to school every day - even if it means facing one or more tormentors who physically and verbally abuse them - EVERY SINGLE DAY! Until the policy of zero-bullying is adopted in all schools and in our communities generally - people will continue to get bullied.

Just like every other species in life, there are those that are considered weak and those that are considered dominant.
Unfortunately we aren't given a middle ground to stand on.
In order for some, who feel weak, to not appear so... they bully.
Be it male or female, no one wants to look weak and get bullied. So, they go on the attack.
Those who refuse to give in to this urge are the ones who get bullied.
When you hear the expression, "Be the better man.", you truly are if you follow it's advice. It involves far more brain power to resist than to give in.
I have a 7 year old son. He is about a foot shorter than all the other children his age-including the girls. He is kind, helpful, has manners, is a straight A student and has great empathy for others. He also has some fairly embarrassing medical problems. He is a prime candidate for the bullies.
He has had to deal with this issue for three years now. He has amazed me at ways he has turned things around for himself. He always comes to me with a problem. I always give him the chance to settle it for himself before I step in. He has amazing confidence in himself because of this.
He had an older boy who knocked him down on the play ground every day. He got up one day, brushed and himself off. He looked that kid in the eye and said, "I'm sorry that you're so unhappy that you have to hurt other people so you won't feel alone. I'm going to go home and pray for you.". And he did just that. Every day for a week he prayed for that little boy and asked God to not let him be sad anymore. That boy looked at him like he was crazy that day. He never touched him again. That boy ended up failing in school. He is now in the same class as my son. He worried about what would happen this year. The first day of school he walked up to this kid and told him that he was glad they were going to be in the same class and would get to be friends. And they haven't had any more problems. Occasionally this boy resorts to this type of behavior. My son is there to remind him that it's not right.
Understanding opens the door to healing and leads the way to starting anew.
