Our IT department watches our internet usage, but I was wondering if there is any way they can see you using Yahoo messenger.

I'm not on a PC. I'm on a MAC. We do have our on IP addresses though, but all of the guys in our IT department don't even know how to turn on a MAC. Does it matter if you are on a PC or a MAC what they can see?

Yes everything is saved on your computer even if you think you have deleted it a lot of times is still there and can be recoved unless you wipe your system and well you will not have the authority to do that. Are they checking it, probably not, nor will they unless there is a reason to. Now sometimes they come across things and that is what gets people fired.

Every software package has it's communication protocol..We have content filtering, which logs internet traffic and limits or eliminates certain types of traffic. P2P, Messenger, are among the bandwidth hogs we've chosen to limit or restrict from a company policy standpoint.

Messenger commonly uses web browser ports for communication however Messenger with voice uses another set of protocols h323 is for VOIP.

Logging consists of point of origin and point of destination, and the data stream. In our content filter we retain a certain number of days of logs..

If your company policy is be there to do your work, then do your work and don't chat with buddies.

SoCalBeachGal is right. You can see and detect anything and everything on a network. A pop up may not come up telling them that you are using messenger, but there is probably a log of it. So if they think something is going on, they just need to check it.

All internet traffic uses different ports to send and receive data. That alone would tell them what you are using on your PC. They should be able to tell if you are using messenger.

There are a ton of methods that an IT department can see the data going across their networks.

They can use a program like Ethereal to see all the network traffic.

They can use Aim-Sniff to see your aim conversations:

They can use driftnet to see the images flowing over the network:

They can use mailsnarf to see your email

They can use Urlsnarf to collect urls that people are connecting to:

So what it comes down to, is if you are breaking the rules, then Yes you can easily get caught.

They can see everything that goes on. If you are in doubt, don't do it.
