The brakes could have got hot and glazed on you, diminishing brake effectiveness. You may want to have them checked. Usually it not hurt as you hopefully released the brake when you noticed the smell. You can just drive and try stopping fast and see if the car handle OK. I not think there any real damage personally. I have done this a few times.

Just have your rear brakes checked for wear.
As for the chap who says not needed.....it's called an "EMERGENCY" brake...not a parking brake. First gear and park are fine when parked, but don't help much in an EMERGENCY', if something goes wrong with your brakes at 60 MPH. This is where you use the "EMERGENCY' brake, to stop the vehicle.

It has no longer something to do with somebody exiting the motor vehicle. it is asserted as a "parking brake" for the easy reason that it would be used whilst the motor vehicle is parked. the different brakes on a motor vehicle is used whilst the motor vehicle is in action to sluggish and end it. A motor vehicle it somewhat is geared in "P" will lock the transmission regardless of the shown fact that it would not lock the wheels as does a "parking brake".

depending on the model of car you may need to adjust the brakes, if it has drum brakes on the axle in question, than it couldn't hurt. it's allot more simple than it sounds, most are self adjusting. but you need to back up and step on the brakes to adjust them so if you have a circle driveway make it a point to back up and stop a couple extra times to give them a chance to adjust.

you might want to check the brakes. otherwise you shouldnt have a problem. make sure the e-brake still holds on a slight incline. if not, have the vehicle repaired.
