The first thing you need to do is learn the basic chain stitch, which is a beginner stitch. You can learn from books or online, but it's still very difficult this way. The best way to learn is from someone who knows how. Try to find someone you know who can teach you. Usually they have classes for free in your area or at the local YMCA on this. It's easy to do, but difficult to learn out of a book, although there are many sites online that will teach you. You need a "H" hook to get started and some yarn also. GOOD LUCK.

Chain 6, loop. Usually you chain 6 to 8. loop it, chain another 6 loop it again and work around like that until you have a built circle. work outward from the larger spaces always repeating that pattern keeping a uniforn tightness and even count all the way around. Eventually, the circle turns into a square. With each of these (big or small as you like them) you can stitch them together and make anything you want.

There are laods of stitch books and a step by step guide to show you what I mean above and how to do it in your local art supply store. They even have free designs along the yarn walls provided by the manufacturer.

Crochet is really easy and provides hours of mindless Busy work... Don't ask me how to knit... I never could get the hang of it myself. THAT is hard!
