You can't do the math to determine this answer. You can not convert from cubic yards to square feet.

However, if you are trying to convert from square yards to square feet the answer would be there are 9 sq. ft. in 1 sq. yd. (You have a square 1 yard by 1 yard, in one yard there are 3 feet, so you have a square that is 3 feet by 3 feet which is 9 square feet.)

If you are converting from cubic yards to cubic feet the answer would be 27 cubic feet are in 1 cubic yard. (You have a cube that is 1 yard by 1 yard by 1 yard, there are 3 feet in a yard, so you really have a cube that is 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet which is 27 cubic feet.)

Hope this helps. Good luck. :)

As mentioned, Cubic Yards is a Volume measure, and Square Feet is an Area measure... On the presumption you have some volume of something and you want to know how much area it will cover, then you will need to know the thickness (on average) of the final placement over the square feet. One cubic Yard will cover 27 square Feet if the average thickness of the layer is one foot.... Half the thickness (6 inches in this example) will double the area covering 54 square feet... I hope this helps.
