A solvent such as toluene is often used to make paste wax for application to furniture as it does not affect cured finishes. If you apply toluene to a rag and start wiping the piece of furniture the wax will start to soften and turn into a paste that you can remove. You will need to keep exposing new areas of the rag to the furniture to keep pulling up wax. Once you have all of the wax build-up off, it would be a good idea to apply some new paste wax as a protectant for the finish. With paste wax applied properly you won't get heavy build-up but, you will keep the furniture looking nice.

On a table this old, you may have a hard time. The best thing would be to strip the table (including the finish) and start over. Just be careful as this table is probably very fragile. Maybe consider the table as it is as part of a charming decor with a story.....

I am pretty sure there is a product called formbys that is for aged furniture. I think wall mart has it or lowes
