"They" are doctors, and they know better than you. You could die, have a heart-attack, pass out, etc.
Some antidepressants even seem to accelerate the effects of alcohol. Dangerous!

It most of the time intensifies the effect of the drug. Like a sleeping pill..you may go to sleep and not wake up. Or if a medicine causes you to be hyper..it make make you way worse. It is not advisable to drink alcohol with medicines they say not to. But some people it doesn't even effect at all. You can try a little to see what happens.

If I remember right, alcohol changes the way your liver metabolizes some medicines, and can make the medicine ineffective, or it can magnify the side effects.

With as high as prescription costs are these days, there's not much point in taking medicine if it's just going to be rendered useless.

The reason is because there is a bit of a sedative effect in the medication and alcohol makes it worse and you could become drunk on one drink

Acetaminophen, which is in Tylenol and many other pain relievers, cold tablets etc., actually causes liver damage. When you add the damage caused from alcohol to that you can cause serious liver damage and even acute liver failure.

I know in the case of anti-biotics, they just don't work or aren't as effective, but there are other drugs that may have some adverse affects .. nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, etc.

Depends what medications.

Projectile vomiting is one of the favourites.
The medicine not working properly is fairly common.

Hard to answer without specifics.
