This car was given to me to use indefinitely by a friend, which is defnitely very nice; I don't want to offend him by complaining about the smell, but it makes me sick. I've tried opening windows (but this gets very cold) and not filling up the tank as high. When the tank is only about a quarter full it stops smelling as bad ... but as soon as I fill it, it happens again. Please help!

This happened to us and there ended up being a hole in our gas tank. You should get it checked out and drive it as little as possible until you do. I actually did get very sick because of this and it took me a long time to stop feeling horrible all the time. Now I can hardly even put gas in my car because the smell of it makes me sick to my stomach. Be careful and have a blessed day!

This happens with even new cars as well so no need to worry. The few things are required to be checked, you can do it yourself instead for paying much at the workshop:-
1. Open hood and see if inlet pipe connected to fuel filter is not leak.
2. Inlet of the carborator is not leaking. If so tighten the clamps which will solve the problem.
3. Since there is no smell if tank is quarter so there is no problem in hood section/engine section.
4. Check fuel cap if there is some leakage change the seal in side the cap.
5. There is a rubber hose which connecte fuel filling place and main fuel tank, most probable cause will be leakage in that hose or from the loose clamps on two ends.. its 80% right.

So go step by step and if problem is solved pray for me that i get some good friend in my life :). Take care n have a nice drive.

"When the tank is only about a quarter full it stops smelling as bad ... but as soon as I fill it, it happens again."

I think this is the key phrase. Your tank has a leak. But it might not even be limited to that.

Next most car bodies are sealed off. Some area like the flooring and the trunk area right below the spare tire, there are rubber stoppers to be used as drains. One, if not all are probably out or worn down.

You definitely have to have it checked. One cigarette or match and bye-bye.

Also the fumes will affect your respiratory tract. Have you noticed being depressed and a little bit off? Head aches? Nausea? That's the effect of the gasoline fumes getting in your system.

You can't hurt your friend by letting them know of a potentially hazardous problem with this car. It sounds like either a leak in the tank, or could just be that the fuel system needs flushed, you really should get it looked at. Is the "check engine" light on? If so, just take it to Auto Zone where they can hook it up to OBDII for free and maybe you'll get an answer as to why it smells so strongly. That is the cheapest, easiest starting point when it comes to something like this. I'm no certified tech, but I grew up around cars and its what I know best thanks to my dad. I have 37 years experience working on cars. I hope I could help you. I would DEFINATELY tell your friend, as stated previously, he or she may not know about this problem, and if they do know, they can guide you in some sort of direction in getting it fixed. Good Luck! :)

You have a bad gas leak. You better take the car to a mechanic soon. It could start a fire.

The leak doesn't necessarily have to come from the carburator. It could be from a fuel line or even the gas tank.

i own a repair shop, and first you need to find out where its coming from, then you need to see if you can fix it,if its the gas cap causing it to do this it can be replaced and if its an older car they didn't have the vent system that today's cars have, and you could always smell a little gas in them, but it not good to be breathing it all the time ,so id check in to getting something done about it,good luck ,i hope this help,s.
