I've had a lot of heroes to battle the villains in my life. Truthfully, one of my favorite heroes is my best friend. Haven't seen her in several years due to geographical differences. But she, strictly by example, gives me a wonderful perspective on life. Being the woman she is I'm sure the only time she knows it is when I tell her and I just called her the other night to tell her I love her.
Peace.

I believe in Jesus, but many here on Y Answers don't.
But there is no doubt that Gandhi existed. In the spirit of Jesus, Gandhi brought revolution in India without firing a shot (though the British fired their share). That's a hero for our time.
Who today thinks of revolution through civil disobedience? We think of the gun, the missile, the warplane, the submarine. We are masters of war, but imbeciles in Love.
