Astronauts have already survived on the Moon, for a few days, but it required a sealed capsule with all food, water, and air brought from Earth. Mars would be a little better, because there is water there, but the astronauts would still need to make food and air. People could not live on Mars like they do on Earth, going outside without a space suit.

The surface of mars:
1) almost totally lacking in oxygen--- much less than the top of the highest mountains on Earth.
2) really cold---hardly ever gets above freezing, and has an average temperature colder than Antarctica.
3) considerably less sunlight than the Earth, because it's a lot further from the Sun.
4) nasty duststorms that last for weeks.
So, maybe inside a dome, with extra oxygen, heaters, and big lamps.
