Everyone is different. Some people have names picked out ahead of time and some people wait until the baby is born to see which name fits the baby best. I had a friend who has 3 kids and she had names picked out ahead of time, but she changed her mind at the last minute after the baby was born.

I planned ahead. I picked something I liked, that would be nice for both when she is young and older. With a middle name not too popular. And made sure everything sounded ok, and no weird initial things going on. Some people like to wait, to see what the baby will look like, but if I did that, I probably wouldn't be able to decide still anyway. Besides, once you name your child, even before birth, you can't imagine them with any other name after that.

We planned ahead. For the longest time - several years before I was even pregnant - we had a name picked out for a girl, if we ever had one. When I actually got pregnant though, I changed my mind about the name. I don't know how I thought of her name, but it just came to me and I knew that's what it had to be. Luckily my husband agreed to the name I came up with. The funny thing is that we only picked out a name for a girl. My OB would never give me more than a 70% chance that my baby was a girl (she was always backwards and had her legs crossed). Even before my OB predicted my baby was a girl, I still didn't have any boys names picked out. We were holding our breath when she was born because we would have had to come up with something quick if it actually was a boy. LOL

We planned ahead. We were already calling our babies by their names before they were born. We changed our mind with the first one, but it was still before birth. it is easier than trying to come up with a name after just having a baby! As for what you should go with, pick something you like because the child has to live with it forever.

Both. PLan ahead with a good amount of options. ANd when you have the baby, you will know which fits. I only knew my kids names becasue I had planned already to name them after their grandmothers.

Collect names that interest you. Many decide in advance. Some change their mind when they see the baby. Sometimes a name and personality does not fit. The later was more common when you didn't know the sex in advance.

We had a few names pick out but we were not set on anything until our daughter was born. When we looked at her the first time we just knew her name should be Peyton, she looked like a Peyton! Good luck with choosing a name, it is very hard!

Since it's your 'creation', you get to choose whether or not to plan ahead, or wait until you actually get to see the new arrival . . .
I personally did it both ways (5 kids), and it worked out just fine!
Relax - let it all be fun, and an adventure!!!

Read books and look around! the simplest thing can be a beautiful name for a child. I saw a sign on my step-father's wall that said 'Serenity' and that's my beautiful daughter's name today.
