When DuBose Heyward wrote the lyric in Porgy and Bess "What you read in the bible, it ain't libel, but it ain't necessarily so." Do you think he knew you can't libel dead people or did he just take a chance because it rhymed?

I think you'll find the word is "liable" not "libel" as in "the words that you're liable to read in the bible".
