It differs from fish to fish. Just like humans. The mythbusters did an experiment on goldfish memory and it proved that goldfish have a memory span of alteast a week, not 3 seconds.

Not really sure but studies have been done that prove that a fish's memory does not start over every 3 seconds. They are not the most intelligent creatures... but there memory does not have a reset button.

I am not sure how long their memories are but I had a few goldfish die after an algae bloom in my tank. One survived and was depressed for about 2 weeks when I got more goldfish and within 2 hours he was back to his old self. I don't know how long he "remembered" the first set of fish but he was definately depressed for a long time in goldfish standards. I think they are not as simple as people say.
