If you pay attention to what you're doing and don't have it up too high then putting in on your skin is fine... the directions say don't put it on your skin because some stupid people burn themselves.

You should always use a heating pad on the outside of your clothing. The cloth is a buffer between the pad and your skin to prevent a burn.

Because you get a layer of protection. If you manage to fall asleep with a heating pad on your skin, you run the risk of burning yourself.

It depends on the type that you use. Most of them should have a cloth layer between it and your skin so you don't get burned.

Other's like the new ThermaCare Heat wraps go directly on your skin.

Direct heat and/or direct cold(ice pack), should NEVER be applied directly on the skin. It can cause injury.

Because you may get a slight burn-when you have it on for so long you don't realize the sensitivity of your skin as much, and sooner or later you may get a burn.
