Because he can no longer be the arrogant pawn of the religious right - he's going to have to start thinking. It'll be a stretch, but I reckon he's up to it. He came to Washington six years ago saying he would unite both sides - then immediately dove into the trough to start sucking America dry for his big business buddies. Now that the democrats have subpoena power, they can start asking some very hard questions about who's been making all the money these last six years - and he's scared to death of what they'll dig up. He's trying to get ahead of the game, but he's scared as hell.
And that is good for the country. It's never good when both houses and the president represent the same party - Republican or Democrat. It opens the door to corruption.

Nancy Pelosi has been a nightmare for George Bush and now his nightmare is becoming a reality. My guess is Bush is going to try to sweet talk and sugar coat a bi-partisan relationship between the Dems and Reps. I feel, however, that Pelosi will stick to her plan which now has teeth and she will make Bush accountable for his actions. Oh the joy of checks and balances!
This is a gesture of good faith by George Bush but he has already made his bed and now he will have to lie in it.
